If you work for a U.S. company that offers web development services, you can take comfort in the fact that you work in one of the top three countries for your profession, at least in terms of salary. That is the good news. The bad news is that there are two other countries in which web developers make more than they do here.
Insider Monkey published a rather lengthy piece in December 2023 discussing the top 15 markets for web developers. Before getting to the list, the article detailed how web development is in such high demand, what web developers actually do, and other intriguing information. I only skimmed that information because I was interested in the list.
Quite a Few Surprises
I will admit to being surprised by some of the entries on the top 15 list. It is probably due to my American bias. When I think of web development services, several of the countries on the list don’t even cross my mind. For example, here are the five countries that rounded out the bottom of the list, beginning at number 15 and working upward:
- Ireland – $75,862
- Iceland – $79,004
- Canada – $80,208
- France – $81,975
- United Arab Emirates (UAE) – $82,111
Of course, all of these average salaries are expressed in U.S. dollars. I was surprised to see Iceland and the UAE on the list. It is not that I did not imagine any web developers could live in those countries, it is that I didn’t expect them to crack the top 15 considering how many countries there are in the world.
A Comprehensive Service
I am guessing I now have your attention. You want to know what the top three countries in the world are for web developer salaries. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. Let us first discuss what web developers do.
Web development services are on the menu at Salt Lake City’s Webtek Digital Marketing. Webtek also has a second office in Austin, TX. Their experts say this: web development services are not the same thing as website design. A complete web development package includes design, but design is just one small portion of a much bigger animal.
Web development is a comprehensive service that handles everything relating to building a website from scratch, designing its user interface, creating scripts and apps that run in the background, and then constantly maintaining it on a day-to-day basis. It requires a huge skillset, which is why companies offering complete web development services often have certain individuals considered specialists in one particular aspect or another.
A web development provider might have a pearl specialist to write embedded scripts. Likewise, there may be a user experience (UX) specialist to oversee designing the interface. It’s all in a day’s work for web developers, but their skills far surpass the small business owner who creates his own WordPress site.
The Top Three
Well, you’ve waited long enough. We have finally reached the point of revealing the top three countries for web developer salaries. Coming in at the third position is the U.S. with an average salary of $101,777. Yes, you read that correctly. Six figures is the norm.
Luxemburg comes in second with an annual salary of $111,149 while Switzerland takes the top spot at $126,025. That means Swiss web developers make approximately 25% more than their American counterparts. If you’re looking to work for a company that offers web development services and you don’t mind leaving the country, you might find a better paying job overseas.
